The Breweries of Bamberg The next two breweries on the list are Keesman Bräu and Mahrs Bräu. They are both in the Wunderburg district, right across the street from one another. It is about a 20 minute walk or a short ride on the Number 5 bus. The Keesmann Brewery is located at Wunderburg 5. Their signature beer is the Herrn Pils, a tasty pilsner. The beer I usually have have is their Sterna unfiltered lager, which I find a bit more interesting. As with most of the Bamberg breweries, they also have a bottled wheat beer and in the fall there is a bock. The pub rooms are well lighted and a bit "airier" than is the norm in Bamberg. As always the food is very good. They close early (3:00pm) on Saturdays and are also closed all day Sunday.
Across the street at Wunderburg 10 is Mahs Bräu. Their signature beer is the Mahrs Ungestpundet, known around town as simply "U." It is unfiltered and served from wooden kegs into stoneware mugs. In addition there is usually a Pils or a Hells on tap. In the fall they brew a light colored bock (Heller Bock) and in the spring a very good (and somewhat unusual) Weisse Bock (wheat bock). The pub has two rooms, one very cozy with an old fashioned tile stove and very low ceilings and the other a more normal restaurant The large courtyard on the way in serves double duty as a biergarten during good weather.
