Geisfeld: Millionaires Row

I had an interesting chat with Frank on Sunday about something I hadn't heard about. Back in November, 10 people from the Stammtisch in Griess won the Euro Millions lottery. A cool EUR30m shared out amongst them, including Peter Griess, the owner. Hence why there is an additional Ruhetag.

Contrary to what you might think, it's not a pure fairytale. As you can imagine, the Stammgaeste are quite old, a couple are seriously ill, one has drug addiction issues and most don't have children etc. They aren't going off on Caribbean cruises that's for sure. Most are still sat drinking there the same as before. Quite sad really.

One thing's for sure though, the future of Griess isn't in doubt. Peter wants to install some new equipment but his son-in-law (the brewer) doesn't want to change the flavour profile.

It's funny, you'd think that kind of money will always change someone's life, but if you already live in a good house in a pleasant village and have relatively few needs then I guess it's a bit of a waste. I don't begrudge them, but somehow feel a young family or someone on a very low paid job would benefit far more from a few million Euros.
