This is why translating words to create meaning is not the way to go I'm afraid. It's actually better the other way round.

Eisschwimmer means ice float. Schwimmer does not just mean a person that swims. It's the same with kühlschiff. Schiff basically means something that holds something. Yes, it is also a vessel. And friendship in English has nothing to do with boats (but it does have a lot to do with 'holding' something). As in, keeping it. Hence kühlschiff is just a vessel that keeps something cool.

We call it an ice float. The same.
