Honestly, i think we need to be careful of using the word 'rude' too often to describe waiting staff. I have very rarely come across 'rude' waiting staff in Bamberg / Germany. Short/curt, yes. But what are my expectations? Do I need a smile? No. A bit of fake love like in countries where tips are essential? No. Do i want to be served as quickly and as efficiently as possible? Yes. Do I get this more often than not? Yes.

Of course it is nice when staff say hello and welcome you but it's hardly going to make a difference to my experience. And like i wrote, Wolfi maybe wasn't being rude per se (though I wasn't there) he was merely making a statement of fact that was not open for discussion. Remember that Tuesday and Wednesdays were holidays here and most people were off Monday too - the early closing was an exception. They also have to deal with a lot of drunk people so whilst Nick wasn't one of them you can understand why there was no desire to get in to a conversation.
