Too much tourism |

| I know what you mean barry, but I wouldn't say it 'ruins my dream of living here' - it's a mild inconvenience at best and just like those who bemoan the students it often adds rather than detracts from the atmosphere. However, my key words were that it's a balance and a delicate ecosystem - if it goes too far then you have problems. My old haunt Jersey had that problem - huge tourism in the 60s and 70s bringing hotels and restaurants that took away housing and driving up costs and places for locals to go. For the locals Jersey was ruined - and now the tourism industry is struggling because it's too expensive. And the hotels are closing rapidly. Anyway, I would class the student population as the ones that have led to a plethora of new places to drink and eat in - they are in Bamberg year round and seemingly have endless time to frequent cafes and bars (I'm not jealous, honest). All those tourists that come ashore off of the cruise ships don't even have time to eat, they just clog up the streets. Even day trippers only frequent the main arteries of the cities. Anyhow, as I said it's about balance, and i won't deny tourism has contributed. Re Zoigl I bow to your superior knowledge but tourism must have played a part in the recent success - and if it means it has saved many Zoiglhouses then I support it but again, balance. Re Spezial, no finer establishment exists in the city, queues, food and all. Re Americans - I did clearly point out it was an observation and not a judgement - they could have come from anywhere, but clearly not Germany I would say. Re Kerwa - taking your own beer and drinking it in the streets is not a crime nor even frowned upon; sitting in licensed premises and drinking it is, and is just not cricket. |
