| But East Anglia doesn't have the finest climate in Britain! Mind you, having carefully compared towns on the British coastline before settling in Colwyn Bay, the difference is not too great. I've commented before on that brewing system. Certainly Courage used it in the old George's Brewery in Bristol for the Boys Beer, Best Bitter and Directors Bitter but it still turned out better than contemporary Courage Beers, as brewed by Charles Wells but soon, I presume, to be transferred to Marston's? If you want to trace the path of old British brewing, Courage is your only man. From it's original home in south London, firstly via Alton, Plymouth, Reading, Plymouth and Newark; then to Newcastle, then Bedford;now ? Absolutely concur with your comments about British seaside resorts, many of which are now in a sorry state. Blackpool is one of the most deprived towns in Britain, while all the north Wales resorts (with the possible exception of Llandudno) have declined -there's not even a pleasure beach at Rhyl anymore, only miles and miles of chalets and static caravans. Colwyn Bay has declined from a smart Victorian watering hole to a typical north-western town, which had a lot of resettlement from the Lancashire cities in the 1970s and is only just recovering. A lot of money has been ploughed into rehabilitation and it's now recovering quite well. However, it still searches for some identity as a holiday place. But I like it! |
