Buttenheimer Löwenbräu Kellerbier

|I did have a few of the Kemmern Bockbier that was at the Kongress Bierfest in Bamberg last year. The brewer was very proud that it was lagered and served in real wooden barrels (from his grandfather's time). I had had the 'normal' bock a week before and it was excellent but this was off the scale. The tanins in the wood had made the beer taste very much like an English old ale, with oaky, vanilla and fruity flavours transoforming the lager into something ale-like.|
For me it was the best beer of the festival, and rare anywhere these days. A friend of mine, Tony (Mark and Barry will know of whom I speak), is a member of the SPBW - the Society for the Preservation of Beer from the Wood (great name), a Birtish society which still searches for beer served (not fermented) in wooden barrels i.e. Sam Smiths, and maybe Wadworths still.
