|Erm...I meant why no "fancy plugs controlled by rods" Barry mentions below. The rest of the western world seems to be able to make use of them without problems (had them in our homes in the US when I was growing up, as well as mixer taps)...assuming you're not being entirely serious about the flooded hotel rooms, as it's also been standard for sinks and tubs to be fitted with overflow-preventing drains for...many decades?|
Actually the Broadstairs flat we stayed in last month (renovated probably 5 years ago) had the fancy rod type plugs, as well as mixer taps. Not great quality taps though. Also poorly chosen for the sink type, as water would spray out all over the bathroom if you turned the water on all the way.
I thought plumbing was a British invention!
