Here in the US were I live we have Gyro (at Greek shops) and Shwarma (at Lebanese or Israeli shops).  Both have the same rotating meat on a spit, like Döner, but as Gerhard says, the way they are served is slightly different.  So, I am pretty sure that this kind of meat on a spit served on pita bread originated in the Middle East and/or Greece.
