Too much Kentish weather

Barry has a looser definition of "not too much difference between" than some other people do. We used to go round and round about how there wasn't too much of a difference between 5% and 4% beer. And this weather business. Maybe just those two topics.

When I was doing some looking into climate stat's for various English coastal regions, I did indeed see that East Anglia is driest and sunniest. But also a bit colder, I think, and windier than Thanet. We'll make it to Norwich someday. Or I will, anyway, city of ale and all that.

I do like the North though, despite the sparklers and even the dreaded, disgusting autovac. I've said that if I could choose a large European city to live in, it would be Sheffield. But the weather....a while back, I wondered about Sheffield with Ramsgate's weather. And my fantasy got the better of me. And so, behold: Sheffield-in-Thanet:

That's to scale. Sheffield city centre is quite a bit smaller than I'd imagined, and would fit perfectly over the immense new horrible shopping complex that they've put there between Ramsgate & Margate. Thanet is pretty flat though, whereas Sheffield stands on seven hills -- just like Rome and Bamberg!

Thanet is actually drier than Franconia, cooler & less stormy in summer, and warmer in winter. The summer afternoon/evening thunderstorms here are annoying for us, coming from Oregon, where such things simply don't exist.

Weymouth (another place we've been and enjoyed, beer a bit more challenging though) is warmer, though wetter, as is Brighton (too big and flashy for us though). And the NW...let's not ruin it for Barry. He's coming from Ireland though.

When we first drove over for Xmas 2014, the UK border guard at Calais asked us the usual questions about our visit: where we were going, holiday/business, how long, etc. He was pretty stunned when we answered "two weeks in Ramsgate". "You know, you may indeed drive further than the Isle of Thanet, you don't *have* to stop there."

Broadstairs is where we prefer to stay, with Ramsgate as a backup. Margate is right out. Though the harbour & sands there are pretty amazing, with GBG-listed micropubs looking across the harbour at each other.

Ramsgate and Margate are undergoing a fair bit of modernisation and renovation. Folk seem to be discovering the place, albeit slowly, with the high-speed line from London. Now's the time to invest...
