OT: French beer

I visited the mining towns of Bethune and Douai, along with Arras, many times during my working life. Really enjoyed being there, the people were very friendly, not antagonistic to the British and liked eating and drinking - really, it was just like being in the Belgian Flanders!  As I said, I was introduced to Belgian beer in this period (early 1990s) and still have the beer menu from the Taverne Le Minck in the Place du Marche aux Poissons (never threw anything away until started packing a couple of weeks ago!).

'Bieres au Tonneau' are Grand Flute blonde and brune at FFr 23 and 26 respectively.  There are 40 bottled Belgian beers, including all our old favourites (such as Sixtus, Chimay, Duvel, Delerium Tremens, Hoegarden, Orval, Maredsous, Leffe - 3 versions, Rodenbach and Rochefort - some of which have now been swallowed by big combines).  They also include Lindemans Faro, Geuze Lambic, Framboise and Cassis.  Prices vary from FFr 22 for 25 cl to around 25/6 for 33 cl.  Just like a typical Belgian beer cafe!
