Yes I too have mixed opinions of Wetherspoons but I think the beer quality is generally improving and as you say they do have some attractive buildings and they do not take over pubs (as far as I know). Of course it does take trade from more traditional pubs which are struggling in many instances so it is certainly not harmless. But to be honest I don't travel to the UK much these days and don't waste my time in places where I would be relying on places where a spoons' is the best beer outlet (except Gatwick).

As for a Franken example I'm fairly sure it will not be a feature anytime soon. The concept of having lots of different beers isn't really 'the point' of going for a beer in Franken. Moe's Bar started with a wide range and brought in barrels from Landkreis Bamberg for the weekends but this concept was more appealing to the beer tourists than the locals. Abseits is slightly different, with a wider appeal and having been long established.

Having said that, many a Bavarian (and some Franconian) beer halls are more raucaus than even the most boisterous Spoons' i've experienced, plus food is almost always on offer. Though I know what you mean, it isn't the same. As an aside I shall certainly be visiting the Bierothek shop in Bamberg and Kitzmann's shop in Erlangen (where I am studying) next year, plus of course Abseits, and will no doubt indulge in some 'craft beers'. But these will be a drop in the ocean of echt Deutsche bier.
