Sometimes the impossible just happens...

Happy new year, professional drinkers!

As you all know one of my main aims is to visit all Franconian breweries, trying all of their beers.

Yesterday the most unlikely thing happened. Quite a sensation for me - I found an old brewery that still brews and was never recorded on a website or in a book. Yeeee-haaaw!

Driving through Hohenlohe-Franken and the western Odenwald with the aim to visit breweries Dörzbacher in Schillingstadt, Hirschbräu in Hirschlanden and Egolf in Schefflenz, we passed a small village called Ballenberg. That's just about 5 kms south of Schillingstadt! Now - driving through we saw a brewery pub from a certain "Brauerei Spall". In the backyard we saw the beautiful 1910s brewery brickbuilding. Examining that we found out, that the brewery still works. After visiting the other breweries (Egolf and Hirschbräu were unfortunately closed that day) we came back and the brewery pub was open. Completely 60s style. We talked to the brewers wife and told her, that we had never heard of the brewery before. She just answered "well, we're very small". We tried: Pils, Kellerpils and Bockbier "Spallator". Both Pils and Kellerpils were excellent. Very fresh but very old fashioned also. The Bock though was heaven! Dark, tasting of Schwarzwälder Cherry cake and very strong.

What else can I say? Sometimes you simply have to have a lucky day!

A dream came true - we discovered an UNKNOWN little Franconian brewery. Feel like Humboldt or Chris Columbus! ;-)

Fred, I'm quite sure, you'll be the first person to have it registered on your website. Brauerei Spall, Ballenberg, lies in the Hohenlohekreis.

Cheers!

A very lucky Jürgen
