Being of an age before the invention of GPS devices, I've never used such a thing - in fact, wouldn't know how to, though sure could work them out. However, being a map enthusiast, for me, half the enjoyment of a trip anywhere is scouring maps and guide books (and timetables) and working these things out. I've never found any problem in navigating any European country, though Belgium, Romania and Ireland did/do pose a few challenges. I guess that if you are used to Irish road signs, anywhere else is eezy-peezy. The other half of the enjoyment is suddenly finding yourself somewhere that you shouldn't be and discovering something that you didn't know existed. Mind you, mein spouse hasn't always concurred with this view and the odd altercation has occurred. I used to labour in the belief that there was no word for 'lost' in Russian, only something like 'a little out of the way' until someone told me that this was a load of old tosh! Mein spouse works on the basis that, if you keep turning left, you'll end up back where you started - quite useful if that is your aim.
