It's a bit screwy in some ways. Yes, if you specify a destination, then that card will only be good for the zones between the start and that destination. Look at the ticket to Geisfeld. On the price information it lists the zones traveled through as 1101, 1102, 1111, 1112, 1111, 1161. These are the zones in which that ticket would be valid. Looking at the eye-bleedingly complex tarif zone map (http://vgn.de/ib/site/documents/media/37381d50-3cc1-1ae8-6b34-9f323bb05f43.pdf/Tarifzonenplan_Gesamtraum.pdf) you see that lines 970, 972, and 976 pass through zone 1161 toward Tiefenellern. That's where Geisfeld lies. The ticket to Burgebrach is valid on zones 1101, 1102, 1104, 1113, 1114. This is actually a fewer number of zones, but the zones are spread further from Bamberg, so they are scattered through 3 tariff levels (Stufen), whereas the one to Geisfeld is only 2+ levels. So if you buy a three level ticket to Burgebrach, you technically can't use it to go to Geisfeld. One way around this down here in Erlangen is to buy a 3 level ticket at a less intelligent machine at a bus stop, rather than the smart machines at the station. These don't let you specify a destination, so you end up with a ticket good for 3 price levels from the starting point, regardless of direction. If you can do this in Bamberg though...this I don't know. For example, I can by a ticket valid for 4 levels from Erlangen to Nürnberg inside the ER Hauptbahnhof, or I can buy a 4 level ticket at the bus stop outside the Bahnhof that's valid to both Nürnberg and Forchheim. Which would you buy? (Assuming you had reason to go to both places!)
