Ale can be fermented very nicely at room temperature, whereas lager yeast is happy when it's fermented quite a bit cooler. The specifics can be better quoted by those who have actually brewed lager at home, I haven't. When you get a bit further along, one thing to consider would be to use an Altbier yeast to simulate a lager whilst fermenting at ale temperatures. They ferment very clean, like lager yeasts do compared to ale yeasts in general. If you add DME to boiling water, it can foam up quite aggressively, I think. Mix it in before the water's close to boiling. My first batches were with DME. It's the way to start.
