[who 'dat?!?] & Tipping

What I mean is...they give you die Rechnung, at which time they will also tell you what the bill is. You then figure how much of a tip you should give, and add it to the bill. Then you tell them this amount and give them your money. They will then give you the change. Example: "We'd like to pay, please". [wait for bill] "Eightteen fifty, please" (wait- er/ress, telling you how much you owe and presenting die Rechnung). [pause for tip calculation...this amount is always tough for us...] "Twenty". [Hand over €20 or €50; in case of the latter, receive €30 in change.] "DANKE SCHÖN!" [wait- er/ress--€1,50 is a good tip for €18,50] OK, that's maybe a bit pedantic, but hey, I know a woman from Mexico who's lived here with her German husband for a couple of years, who didn't know how to tip--it's not at all natural for North Americans! IOW, you tell them up-front how much of a tip you're giving them, as opposed to leaving it as a secret later to be discovered. Hope this makes sense...a few Hetzelsdorfer Weltmeisterschaft Biere into the evening.
