Tipping

My "rule" of thumb is, under € 20, round up to the next €, unless that results in less than € 0,50, in which case, up to the next € 1,50 or something. (Unless service was poor, which never seems to be the case.) Over € 20-30, round up and add another €, or enough to make sure they get 5% or so. We typically only eat out for over € 40 in a restaurant once a month (steak night!), where I'll give almost 10% just because the quality of the steaks and service is invariably so good, and we like the place so well. At our favorite Italian and Greek places, we'll tip usually on the order of 5-7% or so. The manner of tipping is universal: state what you wish to pay including "Trinkgeld" when presented with your bill...leaving money on the table is just not done.
