 The Spalt beers are all Einheitsbier, but tasted on location they nevertheless add a pleasant dimension to a visit in this ancient and well-preserved hop-producing centre. I would have preferred a more pronounced hoppiness in at least some of the beers.

 I don't agree with Jan-Erik here. The beer is not 'Einheitsbier', whereas all produced sorts, from Pils to dark beer, share the same characteristica. And all the beers of Spalt are indeed totally hop pronounced - maybe even too much. The aroma hops of Spalt is very bitter and adds that bitterness to all the produced beers, so you have to drink really slow. You discover the same strong hoppiness in the neighbouring Brauerei Gundel of Barthelmesaurach. Hoppy beers are not my favourite style at all, but I felt I had to defend Spalt style beers against the idea of being 'Einheitsbier'. They're not.
