Ot: end of old English family breweries

Agree about Tyne Bank, not about Mordue or Wylam, though it's been many years since I tried them. Timothy Taylor is less than average and the dark mild is their light mild with caramel added so kind of says it all - how they won CBOB with Boltmakers I have no idea but then I have rerely agreed with the winners and often been quite flabbergasted.

I also don't think much about Roger Protz (I'm on a roll this morning) as he is a sloppy journalist who does not have a proper understanding of brewing history yet still insists on writing rubbish about it thus proliferating the ignorence.

Finally Barry, yes i say that we are in a capitalist economy and that buy outs are a fuction of that - it doesn't mean I like the results. Family breweries have the future of their destiny completely in their own hands - if they want to sell their shares to the another company well that is their choice. I'm pretty sure that happened with Maisel of Bamberg in 2008 - the daughter wanted to sell her shares and the other shareholders couldn't pay her so they had to sell the assets. Of course if I ever met her I would chastise her for being a greedy so and so and having no right to sell such a piece of brewing history to line her own pockets - but ultimately I would be wrong - she does and they do.

Like it or not we have to get used to it and take the microbrewing revolution as a sweetener. It's a pretty good one.
