APA?  Ah, just looked at the webtag, American pale ale.  Um.

Yes, after spending much time in breweries of Eschawo, I appreciate that unterg brewingis much more complex than oberg.  The question is: is it worthwhile going to all that trouble.  Most people that I observe in Franken & Oberpf. don't seem to bother too much about the taste and quality of the beer; as in most places, they simply drink it down without commenting on it, holding it up to the light, sniffing it, etc., etc. One of the more noted consumers in Eschawo actually drinks Zoigl half and half with water! and he/she is not alone in that practice.  In addition, many people in both Franken and Oberpf. drink Radlers - to me, as awful a waste as drinking shandy in the UK.  Also note the comments from a number of our esteemed fellow Forummers about the times when they have struggled thro a seidla of some obnoxious substance, whilst their fellow customers are happily slurping it away!

After a considerable number of years at the business of drinking beer, I've come to the conclusion that most people don't really think too much about the beer they drink, if it a) generally much the same as it always was; and b) not actually poisonous!  It's a bit like music: as a practicing pub musician of nearly the same number of years that I've been drinking beer, I've come to the conclusion that most people just tolerate music (particularly if it doesn't get in the way of their talking) and that most of the people who really listen are actually other musicians!

So to conclude this long missive (long missives seem to be getting popular - must be something to do with the wintery weather), I remain to wonder why unterg brewing became the norm anyway, particularly in central Europe where ambient temperatures for more than half the year make the practice difficult even to this day and, before artifical refrigeration, impossible from May to October.  As I say, I'm going to try a little experement if I can when in Eschawo: that is, to beg a few pints of wort from a brewer and try to brew an oberg version.  Just in the interests of science.
