Cask v Keg pricing

We'll test you on your 'Fok'ston' when we see you next!

Price difference?  Surely a question (yet again) of charging what the market will bear.  Seems to me, from my online observations of contemporary beer selling in UK, USA and, sadly, inceasingly, Germany, the trend is towards gimmicky beers, marketed in much the same way as wine is marketed.  All the guff about different flavours, aromas and notes and encouraging people to try a wide range of different tastes.

Is there anything wrong in all this?  Probably not, if you happily embrace the world of high pressure marketing and selling - it is, supposedly, a world free choice.  However, as Nick's experience shows, the only way that most pubs can provide this sort of choice is by selling pre-prepared beers and that means filtration, pasteurisation etc., etc., leading to over a gassed carbonised preparation that barely resembles beer, as we know it.  It's been said before on this forum (probably by me) that, if you go into a pub in the UK with more than 3 or 4 handpumps, it's unlikely that you'll get a decent pint - it's simply a question of turnover.  The best pub from a new brewer that I've been is the Marble Arch in Manchester (my experience is not so great in this respect) and they limit themselves to about 4 different beers.

Interesting the girl's comment about using handpumps rather than keg devices.  I used to be able to pull prodigious quantities of real ale using handpumps, often serving a heaving bar quite rapidly all on my own, far, far quicker than using keg taps.  As a side comment, we used to have quite an old fashioned till, none of these pre-set buttons and no adding up on the till - strictly forbidden in my pub, the staff were trained to add up as they went along, not too difficult for anyone with half a brain!

There's a strong possibility that we'll be off to Manchester later this month to see J's relations - any pub recomendations gratefully embraced.

Meanwhile Happy Drinking in the New Year!
