What is Kellerbier?

The people on that beer advocate thread probably wouldn't like this answer but I would say to them that if they really want to try a Kellerbier then get on a plane. Yes you can buy a bottle or two of Mahrs U or Maybe even a St. Georgen Brau if you can find it but it just cannot do it justice. I'm thinking back to before I visited Franconia for the first time. I had never heard of Kellerbier before. If someone were to hand me a Mahrs U in the bottle back then I probably would have thought "hmmm that's nice" but from that experience I probably never would have been inspired to sing the praises of Kellerbier or have a burning desire to travel to get more. Now on the other hand if you find yourself sitting at a place like Roppelt's Keller or Griess or somewhere in Bamberg and you have one of these U's or Kellerbiers ... well now you're hooked. Before you know it you're trying to figure out how and when you get back to this magical land of beer (Kellerheim I call it) and figuring out how many kellers you can visit in a 10 day vacation. Maybe I'm just one of the extreme cases? As I look out my window at 4 foot tall snowbanks I can't think of anyplace I'd rather be right now than in a bier keller on a nice day (or even a not so nice day) with a stone krug in my hand. You can have the beach. Unfortunately though, while it's cheap once you get there, flights aren't so cheap and I also imagine it's a tough sell to most wives. Most wives probably don't respond to "Hey honey want to go keller wandering in July?!" For me it's not so bad. Either my wife goes with me since she likes Bamberg, or I buy her a nice gift like a cuckoo clock. Of course, in a few years, my house is going to sound like Gepetto's workshop but that's a small price to pay for good Kellerbier.
